REGULAR MOWING...
-Mow weekly late Spring to early Autumn, then
as needed other times of the year.
-Never take more than 1/3 off the grass height.
-Sharp mower blades are vital.
-Change the direction each time you mow.
-Collect the grass clippings.
-When mowing uneven, sloping or shaded areas cut a
setting higher than the rest of the lawn.
-In dry/hot weather, raise the height of cut.
TOP TIPS
1) Always use a sprinkler. It will give efficient, even coverage. Unless for a tiny area, do not use a hand spray hose attachment as you will need to stand still for 30 minutes or more holding the hose on the same spot. Experience tells us you won’t water correctly doing so.
2) For best results water early morning, if you have to water in the afternoon, this will evaporate faster and you’ll need to water more. Evening watering can result in lawn diseases such as red thread when the weather is warm and humid so should be avoided.
3) Remember to check the soil regularly if the soil is dry or cracking, you need to water more. Ideally the soil will be moist to the touch, sandy soils will dry out faster than clay. To check water depth in the soil, you can cut a small square of soil and see how far down the water has reached. If it’s only in the top 2cm you need to water for longer and more often. Grass roots will grow to where water is, so the deeper the water goes, the more robust you lawn will be.
4) Adjust the watering frequency for the weather. When it hot and dry you may need to water several times a week, it is better to water well with less frequency, than water little and often. The rule of thumb should be to soak the roots.
5) Keep the grass slightly longer. Raise the mower cut height a setting or two. Longer grass will retain more water, look greener and provide shade for the soil so it will dry out less.
6) We can apply our Lawn Hydration Treatment to make your watering more efficient, leading to a greener, more healthy lawn.
7) Obvious tip! If we have a hosepipe ban do not water the lawn. Consider using recycled rainwater or household brown water.
